I would say that your analogy is correct. And I do think the analysis is relevant. As far as I can tell, any group who has or wants to immigrate to America, has to leave behind their familiar cultural traits and take on American ones. This was the case for European ethnics that came to America in the early 20th century and it's true for African and Caribbean immigrants arriving now. The interesting question to me is this: will these African and Caribbean immigrants integrate into the larger mainstream (read: white) culture like their prior immigrant cousins, or will they integrate into America's traditional subculture (read: blackness).

"blackness" experience... maybe the answer will lie in 2 generations from now ?
